The Niagara Region is amongst one of the riches areas in the Canada and most of its history has been preserved and available to the visitors.
A brief summary of the history of the Falls
The Niagara River and Whirlpool Rapids dates back to the Ice Age and is part of the legacy as is the entire Great Lakes Basin. About 18,000 years ago the southern region of the Ontario, Canada, was covered by 2 to 3 kilometers thick ice. Over time the ice sheets gouged out the basins of the Great Lakes. Slowly they melted toward northward and for the last time they released the melted ice water into these basins. About 12,500 years ago the Niagara Peninsula became ice free. Overtime the melted water flow created what is known as Lake Erie, the Niagara River and Lake Ontario all the way down to St. Lawrence River and finally connected to the sea. Through the bedrock, the Falls began its steady erosion from the reduced water flow to the single stream from the original Niagara Falls at Queenston-Lewiston.To learn more about Niagara Falls, we recommend you stay with us and take a drive to the Niagara Falls Visiting Center where you can learn the history of the Falls and the surrounding region.
